While Spring seems like the perfect time to get started on cleaning your home – there is nothing wrong with getting ahead of the game! Plus, you can break things up and accomplish your to-do list one thing at a time rather than trying to do it all at once! While decluttering your junk drawer and going through your wardrobe are likely at the top of your list, don’t forget about cleaning your couches and other upholstered furniture.

Here are a few furniture cleaning tips from the pro’s at Chem-Dry of Wake County.

Tips for Cleaning Couches and Upholstery

1.Vacuum furniture often.

Try to keep up with this chore on a weekly basis (sometimes more often if you–or the kids– tend to snack while sitting on the sofa). Then when it comes to deep cleaning, vacuum and remove all the cushions and use your available attachments to get deep in the crevices where pet hair, dirt and crumbs hide.

2. Polish wood and metal pieces on your furniture.

Don’t forget to wipe down all the non-upholstered surfaces of your furniture using wood polish or a gentle cleaner.

3. Treat your specific upholstery fabric.

Check for a tag on your couch that has specific instructions or precautions for your type of fabric. Common furniture labels are WS (safe to use mild detergent), S (dry cleaner detergent only), X (no water, vacuum only), W (safe to clean with water).

4. Spot treat surface stains

Remove surface stains with a cleaning solution that’s safe for your type of fabric. You can try a store bought cleaner or a DIY solution. We recommend mixing 1/4 cup of vinegar with 3/4 cup water and a couple drops of dish soap in a spray bottle.

5. Allow time for your upholstery to dry

Avoid using too much moisture and cleaning solution so you don’t over-saturate your upholstery. Soak up as much moisture as you can with a towel, then allow several days for your furniture to dry before sitting or using it regularly. You may want to direct a fan at your upholstery as well to aid in the drying process.

6. Schedule a professional upholstery cleaning appointment

The steps above typically work well for maintenance and spot treating. However, your upholstery will need to be professionally cleaned at least once each year to remove allergens and harmful bacteria.
