Area rugs have multiple functions in various rooms of the home. They’re beautiful design pieces and also help protect the flooring beneath.

There are various colors, sizes, and materials to choose from when selecting an area rug. So how can you best weigh your options to find the perfect piece for your specific room?

As the leader for area rug cleaning in Raleigh, Chem-Dry is here to help. We have decades of experience caring for area rugs, and are happy to share some of our pro tips.

Here’s some simple, tried-and-true advice for choosing your rug size room-by-room.

Living Room Area Rugs

Size 9×12 rugs work in rooms that allow for all the legs of your furniture to be on top of it, and 18 inches of flooring between the rug and your walls.

Medium, 8×10 rugs should have the front legs of furniture on the rug and the back legs on the floor.

For a smaller space, 6×9 rugs work well. Place all the legs of your couch or sofa directly on the rug, and just the front legs of accent chairs. Be sure the rug is either the same length or longer than your couch.

Dining Room Area Rugs

Pay particular attention to choosing a rug that will allow dining room chairs to move freely and not drag or get stuck. Size 9×12 will allow for a large table. Make sure there’s at least two feet of clearance around every side of the table to leave enough room for chairs to be pushed out without hitting the wall. Aim for about 18 inches of flooring between the rug and the walls.

An 8×10 rug can work well in a slightly smaller space with a smaller table.

If you choose a 6×9 rug, place the back legs of dining chairs on the floor and the front legs on the rug. Again, leave 18 inches of clearance between the edges of the rug and the walls.

Bedroom Area Rugs

Try a 9×12 rug with a king size bed. This will allow for the bed to have all legs on the rug, with the rug being positioned just below the nightstands. Again, try to allow for 18 inches of clearance between the rug and your walls.

Size 8×10 rugs are great for queen size beds. Size 6×9 works for queen size beds as well, or smaller. Have the rug placed about a third of the way down from the top of your bed.

For small spaces, placing a runner rug on each side of the bed can also be a great option.
